The Power BI Connector for COMMITLY allows you to extract data from COMMITLY to create fully customizable dashboards for your BIM team within your Microsoft environments.

Note: The connector is currently being certified by Microsoft to be included as a standard connector in Power BI. In the meantime, it can be used by installing it manually by following the instructions in this article.

Prerequisites

  • Power BI Desktop

  • Access and credentials to COMMITLY API

Commitly Power BI connector installation (Power BI Desktop)

Note: Commitly Power BI connector is an uncertified (at the moment) custom connector.

  • Copy the connector MEZ file (CommitlyConnector.mez) in your local [Documents]\Power BI Desktop\Custom Connectors folder. If the folder does not exist, create it.

  • To adjust the data extension security settings, in Power BI Desktop, select File > Options and settings > Options > Security.

  • Under Data Extensions, select (Not Recommended) Allow any extension to load without validation or warning.

  • Select OK, and then restart Power BI Desktop.

Commitly Power BI connector Version Upgrade or Credentials Change (Power BI Desktop)

If the connector version is upgraded or Commitly API credentials are changed, additional steps are required to clear the cache.

  • To clear the global cache, in Power BI Desktop, select File > Options and settings > Options > Data Load.

  • Under Data Cache Management Options, select Clear Cache.

  • Select OK.

To clear the credentials cached settings, in Power BI Desktop, select File > Options and settings > Data source settings.

  • Under Global permissions, select COMMITLY API [Client Credentials].

  • Select Clear Permissions.

  • Select Close.

How to get data from a Commitly Connector Data Table in a Power BI report (Power BI Desktop)

  • Create a new blank report.

  • Select Get data and choose More...

  • In the opened Get Data window search and select the Commitly Connector (Custom) connector.

  • Select Connect.

  • Enter Commitly API credentials (Client ID and Client Secret) and Select Connect.

  • Retrieve API Credentials (ID / Key):

    Go to EXTENSIONS > Activate Direct API in COMMITLY.

    After activation, your Client ID and Client Secret will be displayed.

  • Select one Table from Commitly Connector Sources and define a name for a Query.

  • Finish the query by selecting Close & Apply.

  • The queried Table is accessible for data analysis in Power BI.

Commitly Power BI connector installation extra steps (Power BI Service)

Note: Commitly Power BI connector is an uncertified (at the moment) custom connector.

Making Commitly Power BI connector accessible in Power BI Service requires an additional installation of On-premises Data Gateway service from Microsoft.

After installing and configuring the Commitly Power BI connector into the On-premises Data Gateway it will be accessible in Data Source Settings in Power BI Service Workspaces.
