Problem with the opening balance: it has become wrong retroactively. What can be the cause?

COMMITLY calculates as follows:

  • Current balance (= current bank balance)

  • +/- sum of the transactions per period

  • = opening balance per period

This ensures that the preview in the Forecast always builds on the correct starting point.

Deviations in the opening balances can result from the following, among other things

  • Bank sync error, no current balance

  • An integration that provides balances has a sync error

  • With several banks / integrations - possibly different start dates and therefore a transaction period that is not in sync

  • Transactions were ignored by the cash flow (without having been split)

  • Bank / integration delivered the balance but transactions are missing

  • Duplicates

  • No sync for more than 90 days (this creates a gap)

  • Internal transfers between accounts - the value dates of the debit and credit span 2 periods

What can be done?

  • Check the sync status

  • PLANNING - select ACTUALS and visually check the chart for anomalies (horizontal lines over a longer period)

  • Find the period of the problem: reconcile the opening balances between the bank and COMMITLY to determine from when the error occurs going backwards
